Shower Plumbing — Valve, Cartridge, Drain & Pressure Repair

Delex Plumbing repairs all shower plumbing in Mississauga — shower valves, cartridges, pressure-balancing units, drain clearing, and complete shower rough-in for renovations. Licensed, insured, same-day service available on most calls.

Shower Valve & Cartridge Repair

A shower that drips when the handle is turned off has a failed cartridge or worn valve seat — the internal components that seal the water flow when the shower is not in use. In single-handle shower valves, the cartridge is the most common failure point. It controls both flow and temperature through a single moving part, and as the cartridge wears, it first develops a slow drip that worsens progressively into a continuous flow.

We carry Moen 1225, 1222, and 1200 cartridges, Delta 13/14 and 17 series cartridges, Kohler GP77759 and K-GP77759 cartridges, and American Standard cartridge kits on our service vehicles for same-day shower valve repair without a parts run. For less common cartridge types, we identify the valve model during the service call and source the correct cartridge from our Mississauga wholesale supplier for same-day or next-day repair.

Two-handle shower valves with separate hot and cold stems use rubber seat washers and O-rings that compress against a valve seat to stop flow. When these washers wear, the valve drips. We replace the seat washer, O-ring, and valve seat as a set — replacing only the washer without the seat allows the new washer to wear rapidly against the same damaged seat surface.

Shower valve handle leaks — water appearing at the base of the handle or around the trim plate rather than from the showerhead — indicate a failed stem O-ring or a cracked valve body. O-ring replacement is a straightforward repair that stops handle base leaking completely. A cracked valve body requires replacing the entire valve — a more significant repair that involves opening the wall. We confirm the source of the leak before recommending a repair scope.

Shower Pressure Issues — Fluctuation & Low Flow

Fluctuating shower temperature — the classic “cold blast when the toilet flushes” problem — is caused by a shower valve without a pressure-balancing mechanism, or by a pressure-balancing valve whose internal balancing spool has worn or seized. Ontario plumbing code requires pressure-balancing shower valves in all new construction, but older Mississauga homes may have pre-code valves that deliver unmixed hot and cold water at whatever pressure differential exists between the two supply lines.

We upgrade non-pressure-balancing shower valves to modern pressure-balancing or thermostatic valves. For bathtub plumbing valve issues in tub/shower combos, we handle both in one visit. This upgrade requires opening the shower wall for access to the valve body. The valve rough-in body is replaced; the trim kit surface-mounts over the existing tile opening in most cases, minimizing tile disruption. For shower walls where tile repair is required, we document the tile dimensions and recommend a tile contractor for the finish work.

Low shower flow from a showerhead is most commonly caused by mineral scale accumulation inside the showerhead. Peel Region’s hard water — averaging 18 to 20 grains per gallon of calcium hardness — deposits scale inside the showerhead ports within 12 to 18 months of installation without a water softener. Soaking the showerhead in white vinegar removes mild scale. Severe accumulation requires showerhead replacement.

Whole-house low water pressure affecting the shower may be caused by the main pressure reducing valve (PRV) failing, galvanized supply pipes narrowing from internal corrosion in pre-1975 homes, or a partially closed main shut-off valve. A failing water heater heat exchanger in a tankless system can also reduce hot water flow specifically. We test pressure at the main supply line and at the shower valve outlet to isolate whether the pressure loss is building-wide or localized.

Shower Drain Repair & Clearing

Shower drains accumulate hair at the drain strainer and soap residue inside the drain arm pipe. A drain that previously cleared normally and is now consistently slow is almost always a hair and soap blockage within the first 2 feet of the drain arm — easily cleared with a hand drain snake inserted through the strainer opening or through the strainer opening after removing the grate.

For shower drains that back up rather than drain slowly — water pools on the shower floor even with the drain open — the blockage is likely in the branch drain below the shower floor or at the stack connection. We diagnose this with an auger run and, where the blockage recurs, with a camera inspection of the branch drain to identify structural causes including root intrusion or scale.

Shower floor tile grout that shows persistent moisture staining or mould in a specific area — particularly near the drain — may indicate a failed shower pan liner beneath the tile rather than a surface drain problem. A failed shower pan liner allows water to seep under the tile and into the subfloor. We perform a shower pan plug test to confirm whether the pan is holding water before recommending a structural diagnosis.

Shower pan drain body replacement is required when the existing drain has cracked, has a failed gasket at the shower pan interface, or has a damaged grid that allows hair to bypass into the drain arm. We replace drain bodies in tile shower pans by accessing the drain from below the shower floor through the ceiling of the room below, or through a small opening in the shower wall in basement installations.

Shower Rough-In & New Construction

Shower rough-in plumbing installs the valve body, supply connections, and drain in the framing before tile is applied. The valve body rough-in location is critical — it determines the finished handle height, the shower arm centerline, and the tile cut pattern. We reference the shower manufacturer’s installation template and the tile layout plan to confirm the correct rough-in dimensions before setting the valve body.

Ontario Building Code requires a pressure-balancing or thermostatic shower valve for all new residential shower installations. We install Moen M-PACT, Delta MultiChoice, and Kohler Rite-Temp rough-in bodies — all with universal valve trim compatibility so the homeowner can change the handle style without replacing the valve body. The valve body rough-in positions the connection point for both the showerhead arm and the tub spout in combination tub/shower installations.

Walk-in shower installations with multiple showerheads, body sprays, or a handheld wand require an upgraded shower valve or a dedicated thermostatic valve system with volume control. We design the supply configuration to deliver adequate flow to all outlets simultaneously, including upsizing the supply lines if the existing bathroom supply cannot support the combined flow demand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much does shower valve repair cost in Mississauga?

A: Shower cartridge replacement typically costs $130 to $280 including the cartridge and labour. Full shower valve replacement (valve body and trim) costs $350 to $700 depending on the valve type. Call 416-910-2550 for a free estimate.

Q: Why does my shower lose hot water after a few minutes?

A: Rapid hot water loss in a shower is most commonly caused by a water heater that is undersized for household demand, a failing water heater element, or a crossed hot and cold connection at the shower valve. Less commonly, it results from a sediment-blocked dip tube inside the water heater that allows cold inlet water to mix with the hot outlet. We diagnose the cause during the service call.

Q: Can you fix a shower without removing the tile?

A: Yes, in most cases. Shower cartridge and seat washer replacement, drain clearing, and showerhead replacement are all done through the existing access points without disturbing tile. Shower valve body replacement or supply line repair does require limited tile access — we minimize the opening required and advise on tile repair options before starting.

Q: Why is my shower draining slowly even though I can't find a visible clog?

A: Shower drain blockages are often below the drain strainer, built up in the first 12 to 18 inches of the drain arm pipe, and not visible without removing the strainer grate. Hair and soap residue attach to the drain arm walls rather than forming a single visible plug. We remove the strainer and use a hand auger to clear this section efficiently.
