Garbage Disposal Repair — Jammed, Humming & Not Working
A garbage disposal that hums but does not spin has a jammed grinding plate. The motor is receiving power but cannot turn because a bone fragment, fruit pit, or piece of cutlery has lodged between the impeller and the grinding ring. The correct first step is to insert the hex key into the reset port on the bottom of the disposal and manually turn the grinding plate to free the jam — then press the red reset button before attempting to restart the unit.
If manual hex-key freeing does not clear the jam, the impeller or grinding ring has sustained damage that prevents the plate from turning freely. We remove the disposal, inspect the grinding chamber, and determine whether the jam can be cleared by removing the obstruction or whether the impeller plate is damaged enough to warrant disposal replacement. For units more than 5 years old with significant wear on the grinding ring, replacement is typically more cost-effective than continued repair.
A disposal that does not hum and does not respond to the reset button is either unplugged, has a tripped breaker on its dedicated circuit, or has a failed motor capacitor. We check the power supply before diagnosing a motor failure — many “dead” disposal calls are resolved by resetting the circuit breaker or confirming the plug connection under the sink. When the power supply is confirmed good and the unit still does not respond, motor failure is confirmed and replacement is recommended.
A disposal that runs but produces a grinding noise without the plate turning has a worn or broken impeller. The impeller (also called the flywheel) is the rotating disc that holds the hammers or impeller arms. When the impeller breaks, the motor continues running but the grinding function is lost. Impeller replacement is not a field repair — the grinding chamber must be replaced as an assembly, making full disposal replacement the standard repair approach.
Garbage Disposal Leak Repair
Garbage disposal leaks originate from three locations: the sink flange (where the disposal mounts to the drain opening in the sink), the dishwasher drain inlet port (where the dishwasher drain hose connects to the disposal side), and the discharge outlet (the drain connection from the disposal to the P-trap). Each requires a different repair.
Sink flange leaks — water appearing at the top of the disposal where it meets the sink bowl — are caused by deteriorated plumber’s putty under the flange body, or loose mounting ears. For a sudden large leak under the sink, call our emergency plumbing line at 416-910-2550 any time. Repair requires removing the disposal, cleaning old putty from the drain opening, applying fresh plumber’s putty, and remounting the disposal — a 45 to 60 minute repair.
Dishwasher inlet port leaks appear as water dripping from the side of the disposal body at the dishwasher drain connection point. The corrugated dishwasher drain hose connects here with a hose clamp. If the clamp is loose or the hose has pulled away from the fitting, water escapes during the dishwasher drain cycle. We replace the hose clamp and inspect the hose end for cracking — replacing the full drain hose if the hose end has deteriorated.
Discharge outlet leaks at the bottom of the disposal — where the drain elbow connects to the P-trap — are caused by a loose elbow retaining clip or a deteriorated gasket inside the elbow connection. We replace the gasket and retaining clip as a set, and replace the drain elbow if it shows cracking at the elbow body. For leaks from the very bottom of the disposal body (from the motor section), the internal seal has failed — this is not a field repair and requires disposal replacement.
New Garbage Disposal Installation
Garbage disposal installation involves the sink flange assembly (plumber’s putty under the flange, mounting hardware installation through the sink drain opening, and snap ring securing the flange from below), the disposal body mounting (twisting the disposal onto the mounting ring and confirming all three mounting ears are engaged), the drain connection (drain elbow with P-trap connected to the building drain or to the sink basket drain), and the dishwasher drain connection where applicable.
We install InSinkErator and Moen garbage disposals in both standard and heavy-duty configurations. InSinkErator Evolution series (3/4 HP and above) are recommended for households with high food waste volume or hard foods. Standard Badger series (1/2 HP) are appropriate for light use. Moen GX series disposals are an alternative with a similar power range. We advise on model selection based on household size, food waste habits, and drain pipe configuration.
When a garbage disposal is installed in a kitchen that previously had only a sink basket drain (no disposal), the drain rough-in must be assessed for compatibility. The disposal requires a 1-1/2-inch drain connection with adequate slope to the P-trap. For kitchens with double-bowl sinks, we configure the disposal on the primary bowl and connect the secondary bowl drain to the disposal drain outlet using a center drain fitting.
Ontario Building Code classifies garbage disposal installation as part of kitchen plumbing work requiring a licensed plumber for the drain connection and the dishwasher drain inlet connection. The electrical connection — hardwired or plug-in — requires an electrician or can be handled by a homeowner if a plug-in connection to an existing GFCI outlet is used. We provide the plumbing connection and advise on the electrical requirement for hardwired units.
Garbage Disposal Replacement
Garbage disposal replacement is the correct approach when: the motor has failed, the grinding chamber has a crack, the internal seal has failed (leak from the bottom of the motor section), or the disposal is more than 8 to 10 years old and has required multiple repairs. Disposal replacement is a 45 to 75 minute job including disconnect, new mounting if required, drain connection, and leak confirmation.
InSinkErator disposals use a standard mounting configuration (the 3-bolt mounting system) that is compatible across most InSinkErator models. This means that replacing one InSinkErator with a higher-capacity InSinkErator typically requires only removing the old disposal body and mounting the new one on the existing mounting ring — the flange and mounting hardware do not need to be replaced. We confirm mounting ring compatibility before the service call to ensure we arrive with the correct replacement unit.
Moen GX series disposals use a different mounting system than InSinkErator. Replacing an InSinkErator with a Moen — or vice versa — requires dismounting the existing flange and mounting ring and installing the new brand’s mounting hardware. We include the complete mounting hardware swap in the replacement price when a brand change is involved.
For disposal replacement in conjunction with a kitchen sink replacement or renovation, we coordinate the disposal installation with the sink setting and countertop installation to ensure the drain rough-in aligns with the new sink bowl drain location. The disposal mounts to the sink drain opening — changing the sink position requires confirming the drain rough-in below is still appropriately positioned for the new layout.
What Should Not Go in a Garbage Disposal
Garbage disposal jams and drain blockages are largely preventable. Items that should never enter a disposal: bones and fruit pits (hard enough to chip the grinding ring and jam the impeller), fibrous vegetables such as celery, artichoke leaves, and corn husks (fibres wrap around the impeller shaft and seize the motor), starchy foods such as pasta, rice, and potato peels (form a paste inside the drain arm that sets into a blockage), grease and cooking oil (solidifies in the drain pipe downstream of the disposal, producing progressive blockage over time), and non-food items including cutlery, bottle caps, and rubber bands.
Running cold water while operating the disposal is correct — cold water keeps grease in solid form so it passes through the drain rather than coating the drain arm interior. Hot water liquefies grease during the disposal cycle but it resolidifies downstream. We advise running cold water for 30 seconds after turning off the disposal to flush the drain arm. If your kitchen also has a dishwasher, the dishwasher drain hose connects to the disposal — we inspect both connections during any disposal service call.
For Mississauga homeowners whose kitchen drain and sewer lines have experienced repeated blockages attributed to food waste, we recommend scheduling a drain camera inspection alongside the disposal service call. Camera inspection identifies whether grease accumulation, scale, or root intrusion downstream of the disposal is contributing to the recurring blockage pattern. Hydro jetting restores the full drain bore when accumulation is confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much does garbage disposal installation cost in Mississauga?
A: Garbage disposal installation by a licensed plumber — supply, install, drain connection, and dishwasher drain hookup where applicable — costs $250 to $450 for the labour portion. Disposal unit cost is separate ($80 to $350 depending on the model). We can supply and install as a combined job. Call 416-910-2550 for a free estimate.
Q: My garbage disposal is making a humming sound but not spinning. What is wrong?
A: A humming disposal that will not spin has a jammed grinding plate. Insert the hex key (usually supplied with the disposal) into the hex port on the bottom centre of the disposal and manually rotate the plate back and forth to free the jam. Then press the red reset button on the bottom of the disposal and try again. If the jam does not clear with the hex key, the impeller is damaged and the disposal needs professional service or replacement.
Q: Can I use a garbage disposal with a septic system in Mississauga?
A: Garbage disposals can be used with septic systems but require more careful management of what enters the disposal. The increased solids load from food waste enters the septic tank and increases the frequency of required pumping. Septic-assist disposal units with enzyme injection systems (such as InSinkErator Evolution Septic Assist) are designed specifically for septic system compatibility and are the recommended model for Mississauga homes on septic.
Q: How long does a garbage disposal last?
A: A quality disposal in normal residential use lasts 8 to 12 years. Heavy use, grinding inappropriate items, and Mississauga’s hard water all shorten lifespan. When a disposal requires its second or third repair within a year, or when it is over 10 years old and has significant grinding noise or reduced performance, replacement is more economical than continued repair.
Q: Why does my garbage disposal smell even after cleaning?
A: Persistent disposal odours are caused by food waste accumulation on the underside of the splash guard (the rubber baffle inside the drain opening), on the grinding ring, and on the impeller arms. Cleaning the splash guard underside with a brush and dish soap removes most odour sources. For odours that persist after cleaning, we inspect the grinding chamber during a service call — accumulated waste on the grinding ring that cannot be cleaned in place may require disposal replacement.
